Study Shows HFSA Training Program Boosts Clinician Confidence in Delivering Guideline Directed Medical Therapies for Heart Failure Patients

HFSA News Press Release

The OMT-HF program may provide a low-cost, scalable intervention to improve clinician attitudes and comfort with the initiation and up-titration of GDMT

A recent study conducted at 12 centers across the United States has found that participation in the Heart Failure Society of America’s (HFSA) Optimal Medical Therapy in Heart Failure Certificate (OMT-HF) program significantly increases clinicians’ comfort and confidence in implementing guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) for patients with heart failure. This finding has important implications for improving patient care and closing persistent treatment gaps.

The HFSA OMT-HF program, available at hfsa.org/omt, is a low-cost, self-paced, online training course offering continuing medical education (CME/CE) credits. Designed to empower all members of the multidisciplinary heart failure care team, it is particularly valuable for general practice clinicians—including primary care physicians, hospitalists, internists, physician assistants, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners—who are essential to managing heart failure across care settings.

Despite clear clinical guidelines, GDMT remains underutilized in real-world practice. This program is changing that,” said HFSA President Michael Felker, MD, FHFSA. “HFSA is proud to be the professional home for the entire heart failure care team, and OMT-HF reflects that mission. We are the only organization focused on equipping every member of the team—regardless of specialty—with the tools to confidently deliver guideline-directed therapy and improve outcomes for people living with heart failure.”

“Across multiple provider types including pharmacists, hospitalists, advanced practice providers, and general cardiologists, the OMT-HF program helped clinicians feel more comfortable and competent in the nuances of GDMT prescribing” said Trejeeve Martyn, MD, MSc, Director of Heart Failure Population Health at Cleveland Clinic, the center that analyzed the survey data. “The OMT-HF program helps broaden the group of clinicians who are comfortable managing GDMT post-discharge. This is a key part of our strategy to increase access to optimal heart failure management.”

Built in an accessible, modular format, the OMT-HF program allows clinicians to complete training on their own schedule and apply best practices immediately. As heart failure prevalence continues to rise, widespread adoption of GDMT is more important than ever. Programs like this are essential to building system-wide capacity to meet patient needs.
