Towards a Larger Heart Donor Pool: Deeper and Wider
Changes in the heart donor pool over the past decade have included the use of donors previously deemed unacceptable, donation after circulatory death, and the emerging prospect of xenotransplantation. Attendees will become familiar with the current supply and demand of hearts for transplantation. Utilization trends for organs with increased risk of adverse post-transplant outcomes will be discussed. An updated discussion of xenotransplantation will provide context for future donor pool expansion. A point–counterpoint discussion of the two primary techniques for procurement of hearts after donor circulatory death will provide practical context for this technique in contemporary practice.
