Obesity Management in Heart Failure: Tipping the Scales
This session will provide a comprehensive overview of pharmacologic and lifestyle interventions in patients with heart failure.
There is growing clinical interest in optimizing strategies for managing obesity in patients with HF, especially with recent recognition of the benefits of GLP-1s in cardiovascular disease. However, managing obesity in the HF population can be challenging in light of dietary restrictions, exercise limitations, and varying disease severity. The use of anti-obesity medications, like GLP-1s, should be employed in concert with a multimodal approach to optimize overall nutrition and health.
The beneficial effects and limitations of weight loss achieved through either lifestyle and/or pharmacotherapy on cardiorespiratory fitness and quality of life will also be discussed. The final speaker will review how to identify patients with obesity and heart failure who may benefit most from pharmacotherapy. The goal of this session is to provide practical strategies for implementing medications, diet, and nutrition in patients with HF.
