Beyond Devices: How Integrated Digital Health Can Improve Heart Failure Care

HFSA News Research

Digital health has long promised to improve heart failure care, but adoption has often stalled at the point of implementation. Clinicians are inundated with patient-generated data, yet many systems fail to translate that information into timely, actionable care.

A new scientific statement from the Heart Failure Society of America and the American Association of Heart Failure Nurses tackles this challenge head-on. Instead of evaluating technologies in isolation, the statement focuses on how integrated health technologies (IHT) can be embedded into existing workflows, defining who monitors data, how alerts are triaged, and when clinicians should intervene.

The statement emphasizes that digital tools only improve outcomes when paired with interoperability, interdisciplinary teams, and timely clinical response. By outlining practical strategies for implementation and identifying future opportunities such as automation and machine learning, the guidance offers a roadmap for making digital health work in everyday heart failure care.

The Integrated Health Technologies in Heart Failure: A Scientific Statement from the Heart Failure Society of America and American Association of Heart Failure Nurses is published in the Journal of Cardiac Failure (JCF).
