Designing and conducting clinical trials for decongestive devices in acute heart failure

Multiple novel devices are being investigated with the aim to improve decongestion during AHF and subsequent cardiorenal outcomes. Numerous questions exist about the design of clinical trials to test emerging device therapies, including patient selection criteria, primary outcome selection and incorporation of hard cardiovascular endpoints, the assessment of decongestive and renal outcomes, and the duration of the device intervention.
